This is the sixth call for Research Pairs projects within <\/span>Digital Futures<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), <\/span>Stockholm University (SU)*<\/span> and Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) are eligible to apply for funding under this call.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About Digital Futures<\/h2>\n

Digital Futures <\/span>is a cross-disciplinary research center that <\/span>explores and advances digital technologies to tackle societal challenges in Sweden and globally. Established jointly by KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, we fund strategic research projects aligning with our vision<\/span>. Purpose<\/h2>\n

The Research Pairs Projects call is a funding instrument designed to encourage collaboration between two early-career researchers and to identify new research collaborations that have the potential to evolve into significant scientific endeavors within the next 3-5 years. This initiative aims to support scholars in their early careers who show promise as future digital leaders. These individuals are expected to actively engage and contribute to various initiatives within Digital Futures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will support projects that can show high scientific quality, originality, and an interdisciplinary approach. <\/span>The research question (s) should have a digitalization aspect, and the project should fit into the Digital Futures Research Matrix<\/span> addressing at least one research theme and societal context area. Eligibility<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. The researchers in the pair should belong to either i) two different KTH schools, ii) KTH and RISE<\/span>1<\/span>\/SU, iii) RISE\/SU. Researchers can only be <\/span>PIs or co-PIs for one proposal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Important: Researchers who have previously been PI or co-PI in a Research Pairs project are not eligible to apply for this call.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Each applicant needs to have obtained a doctoral degree not more than 12 years ago<\/span>2<\/span> at the time of <\/span>the submission deadline 2025-06-11<\/span><\/b>, have 80% employment or more at KTH, RISE or SU with one of the following positions: Assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, or permanent full-time Researcher (“tillsvidareanst\u00e4llning\u201d). <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Researchers do not need to be Digital Futures faculty when applying but will become Digital Futures faculty if the project is funded.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    * Note that Stockholm University will found up to 1 (one) PI in this call.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Project Duration and Maximum Funding<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Up to five projects will be selected. The duration of the projects is two years with a maximum funding of 2 MSEK p<\/span>er project (1\u202fMSEK per project year). The budget must be split equally between the two PIs <\/span>(500 KSEK per calendar year per PI). The amount applied for must not exceed the maximum funding for a project in this call.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Applicable Funding Policy for Digital Futures Faculty<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Researchers can be involved in several projects under different instruments, but within Digital Futures, the funding per PI is limited to 1 MSEK\/year. Hence, funding that you may have received under the current Digital Futures instruments Flagship projects, Research pairs, Research pairs Consolidator, Demonstrator projects, and Seed Projects will be taken into consideration. Funding from Digital Futures to Societal Innovation Projects, and Industrial Innovation Projects, is included, but not the part from partners. Digital Futures Fellows, Postdoctoral Fellows projects, ISPP postdoc Projects and\u202f<\/span>C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute<\/span><\/a>\u202fprojects are not considered.<\/span><\/p>\n

    How to Apply<\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. Fill in the application according to the project description template:<\/span>\u202fTemplate Research Pairs project 2025<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Create an account on the application submission system and register the application stating the title, PIs and a short abstract by the registration deadline <\/span>2025-06-04<\/span><\/b> using this link: <\/span>https:\/\/crp.dsv.su.se\/research-pairs-25\/<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Complete the application including uploading the project description to the submission system before the call deadline <\/span>2025-06-11, <\/span><\/b>using the same link as in step 2.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Evaluation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

      The project proposals will be evaluated by an external international expert panel. <\/span>The <\/span>evaluation will be based on the following criteria:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Scientific quality and originality of the proposed research<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Quality, originality, and potential impact of the project proposal to make significant contributions to the field and advance the state-of-the-art.<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Merits of the applicants<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Applicants’ scientific track-record and their relevant background for the proposed research project. This includes education, relevant work experience, publication record, as well as earlier research projects and other scientific achievements.<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Degree of interdisciplinarity and composition of the research pair:<\/span><\/b> The team brings together diverse competences to address the proposed research challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Feasibility of the project: <\/span><\/b>For example, feasible goals, work plan, budget and resources.<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Conformity to the scope of Digital Futures: <\/span><\/b>The project addresses a<\/span>t least one thematic area and societal context area in <\/span>the Digital Futures Research Matrix<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The evaluation will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the evaluators independently grade the project proposals according to the criteria. Based on the outcome, the top proposals will be invited to the phase 2 hearing, where the applicants present their projects and answer questions by the evaluation panel. After the hearing, the panel finalises their ranking and recommends a set of projects for funding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Based on the evaluation and available funding, the DF Executive committee compiles a funding proposal on how many of the top project proposals to fund. The funding proposal is then sent to the DF Governing Board and the KTH President for decisions in that order.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
