{"id":8912,"date":"2022-08-15T13:15:35","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T11:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.digitalfutures.kth.se\/?page_id=8912"},"modified":"2024-12-05T11:31:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T10:31:02","slug":"data-driven-design-for-climate-action","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpmu-tris.sys.kth.se\/digitalfutures\/research\/postdoc-fellowships\/completed-postdoc-fellowships\/data-driven-design-for-climate-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Data-Driven Design for Climate Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October 2022 &#8211; October 2024<\/p>\n<p><em>Objective<\/em><br \/>\nThis research will apply data-driven design to Climate Action by utilizing data from design, manufacturing, and the entire product lifecycle to learn how early-stage decision-making maps to downstream carbon emissions for complex systems.<\/p>\n<p><em>Background<\/em><br \/>\nArtificial Intelligence has transformed the fields of Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing. Data-driven methods also have the potential to be a valuable tool in the fight against climate change, but not before such data is ready for computation. If data from product design, manufacturing, consumption, and retirement could be quantitatively represented for computation, then we could learn how to produce and consume more sustainably.<\/p>\n<p><em>About the Digital Futures Postdoc Fellow<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Haluk Akay<\/strong> completed his doctoral research in mechanical engineering at MIT. His doctoral thesis developed methods to represent textual design data for computation by extracting structured \u201cwhat-how\u201d information and evaluating designed systems using AI-based language modelling and design principles.<\/p>\n<p>Haluk\u2019s research interests lie in using design and data-driven methods to address complex climate change and sustainability problems.
